Interview with the Production Team: How Staten Island's Best Raw Local Honey is Produced and Packaged; Plus See Why People Are Using CBD for Pain Management
This past Tuesday, February 18th, I had the honor of speaking with the dedicated production team at Beezy Beez Honey, the number 1 spot for local honey in Staten Island. At this unique grab and go, foodies alike can purchase raw, local honey that’s been unprocessed, along with other things such as specialty refreshers and coffees. They can even ask for a drizzle of raw honey in their morning or afternoon java! And, it’s more than just a honey shop.
Recently, Beezy Beez launched a line of edibles. While CBD and THC are controversial topics of conversation, the team did not hesitate to share their experiences of how this natural approach to common health woes such as chronic pain, sleep issues, and anxiety changed their lifestyle. We also talked about how honey is made from start to finish at Beezy Beez. Read along to learn more!
Sidney Mansueto: What would you say is the first step to making edibles?
Quality Assurance Manager: The first step is always having everything we need such as the right ingredients such as gelatin formula and the mold to make enough.
Sidney Mansueto: Gotcha. Edibles have been proven by regular users and even the medical community to be a more natural and calming approach to common health issues, rather than resorting to over the counter, pharmaceutical medicine that often comes with rather concerning side effects. How have they helped you in your own wellness journey?
Quality Assurance Manager: I’ve had painful arthritis for years, but when I learned about CBD oil, I tried it and found it to work for me. Now, I apply it very frequently and think it’s helped me in other areas of life, especially here as the Quality Assurance Manager, where I am on my feet for most of the day, making sure operations run smoothly.
Sidney Mansueto: I think if people want to use the THC edibles they should be able to take baby steps and learn how to use them responsibly and safely, especially with the fentanyl scare being so common nowadays. How does the team approach the words “safety first” in the process of making edibles?
Quality Assurance Manager: Just like honey, edibles are also strictly tested for safety, and with us being licensed by New York State to sell edibles, everything is 100% safe as it’s been tested. The only time a person could get a “bad bag” of marijuana is if they buy it from a dealer. Dealers sell products illegally, and are not tested or licensed by the state similar to how legitimate companies like ours are.
Sidney Mansueto: As I understand, THC and CBD are two different things and I think it is great that people have options. What do you think is the better choice for a first timer who is interested in trying natural medicine?
Quality Assurance Manager: Definitely CBD, because it won’t get someone high and I think that’s a small step as well as one that could ease someone’s worry. CBD, like a lot of natural oils, is a good relaxer and very soothing.
A key member of the production team shared with me not only how CBD has changed her overall health journey, but also how it has positively impacted her performance in the workforce. Working in quality assurance, she is constantly on the move and ensuring operations function before, during, and after peak honey production season. In addition to our conversation about Beezy Beez's edibles launch, we also talked about how Beezy Beez makes its signature product - fresh, raw local honey like no other honey I've tasted before.
I was taken on a tour throughout the manufacturing site where large pieces of metal equipment were hooked up and prepared for honey making.
Sidney Mansueto: Let’s talk about local honey. What’s a typical day of production like?
Quality Assurance Manager: Because honey production slowed down as it’s Winter, I’ll show you around the site to see how honey is made. During peak production in the spring and summer, we take the raw honey made from the bees and pour it into a metal machine to strip the honey from any bee leftovers such as chipped wood pieces from the hives. Once the honey is all clean, we take it to the next step of cleaning it extra. Once that is done, the honey gets bottled for distribution in a timed machine.
Sidney Mansueto: It’s interesting to see up close how good manufacturing gets done. Are there any new honey creations coming?
Quality Assurance Manager: Currently we are working on something for dogs. We already have CBD dog biscuits for sale, but this new product is similar to honey. For humans though, we are working on restocking apple pie honey.
Sidney Mansueto: I also heard about Blueberry Honey. I love anything with berries! Any word on when that will be on the shelves?
Quality Assurance Manager: Blueberry honey is a summer thing, and it hasn't been made in a while. Maybe it will make a comeback next summer!
Sidney Mansueto: There is always something new to try at Beezy Beez. It was a pleasure speaking with you. Thank you for your time today!
Quality Assurance Manager: You're very welcome.
After wrapping up my interview with the production team, I spent some time in the shop deciding what to bring back home for my folks to try.
